EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
