Revitalized Medvedev Wins First Trophy in Nearly 30 Months

Nineteen of Medvedev's 21 championships have been earned on hard surfaces

A comeback the Russian player claimed his initial title for nearly 30 months with success over Corentin Moutet in the competition title decider.

The Russian, a ex- world number one, has had a challenging season, achieving just one win at the major tournaments and suffering a meltdown at the New York tournament.

Medvedev's inconsistency on the tennis tour - and issues with his serve in particular - led to him falling of the elite rankings and eventually splitting with former trainer Gilles Cervara.

Presently working with Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, he has consistently advanced in the past month - culminating in a hard-fought three-set triumph over opponent Corentin Moutet.

It is Medvedev's maiden title following the Italian tournament and initial on a hard court from that period of 2023.

Victory also means Medvedev has won 21 victories at twenty-one different competitions.

"It's the first time I have attended a tournament with my both daughters at once, so to win a trophy is especially meaningful," said world number 14 Medvedev.

"This championship is in dedication of my younger daughter my daughter, because the initial championship I got when my older daughter my daughter was born was for her."

The athlete, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his last six title deciders, featuring in that event earlier this year.

The player's counter-punching approach and regular outbursts on the tennis court had led commentators to wonder if his ability to compete at the top level was finished.

Yet the 29-year-old has altered his approach in the last few weeks, making an effort to come to the net and perform assertively, supported by an enhanced service.

The champion fought back from a disadvantage in the opening set against the tricky Moutet, securing 4 of the final five points to gain the advantage.

Both players swapped break points in the following set before the challenger, bidding for his maiden tour championship, seized the initiative to create a third set.

He rescued four early-game break points in a close third set before the Russian secured a break to that score to secure the win.

Appropriately, he earned victory with a shot at the front of the court, with his opponent failing to control a return after a lengthy match.
