The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a major honors show draws close, one notices a clamor for the addition fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
